German orchestral association: Federal support required

The German Orchestra Association (DOV), which is powerful in music matters, represents 129 professional orchestras in Germany, most of which are currently on short-time work, which secures their jobs. But the DOV wants more. After the epidemic has subsided, a federal program that will run over several years will directly support local cultural budgets. Federal funding should only be granted if the municipalities keep their cultural budget stable. The fact that cities such as Munich, Nuremberg or Jena have already decided to make savings in the cultural sector is the wrong approach from DOV’s point of view, because investments in cultural institutions and in the independent scene would ensure inner cities are worth living in. In addition, the DOV advocates locally differentiated openings of cultural institutions, depending on the incidence value of the cities.
